I (Still) Heart NYC

It has been quite some time since I have blogged about New York City, but no worries, I still love it. I am graduating in December and, therefore, have been applying to (many, many) jobs. Since I have high hopes to go back to the city I fell in love with two summers ago, most of the jobs I’m applying for are in NYC. Needless to say, New York has been on my mind even more so than normal lately.

This brings me to the next blog I am blogging about: this is why i love ny.

The woman who writes this blog (her identity is not part of the blog) will either post random things that make her love the city or will write longer-form posts that go more in-depth of why she loves NYC. I like that she combines both styles because sometimes I don’t want to do a lot of reading but more seeing.

In this post, she said she loved NYC for the creation of a new food genre: Japanese-Jewish food. This is matzo ball ramen soup from Shalom Japan, a new restaurant in New York.

The author also excepts pictures and explanations of why YOU love New York. You can submit them on her blog or you can instragram a picture with the hashtag #thisiswhyiloveny.

This is a submission from one of her followers. She included his name and his caption along with the picture.

Recently, she wrote a post called “How Desirable Is Unavailable? A ‘Bachelorette’s’ Human Experiment.” Her and a few friends had a fake bachelorette party where they took turns being the bachelorette at each bar. They discovered some pretty cool things about men and it’s worth checking out. In fact, Huffington Post, Fox 5 News, and The Frisky spoke about her post on their news segments!
If you’re a lover of NYC but cannot currently be there, this is definitely something that helps cope.

The Big Picture

I have posted before about how I love great photography (but who doesn’t?!). What I have found this time around is an amazing current events photo blog.

the_big_picture_boston_globe_fotoblog-300x217

This blog is called The Big Picture and tells “news stories in photographs.” The site is produced by a select group of photo editors from The Boston Globe. The majority of the images come from companies such as the Associated Press, Reuters, and Getty Images, who license them to The Boston Globe for their use. Other photos come from public domain sources such as NASA, and others from private photographers who share them with the Big Picture for one-time use.

All photos must be very good, high-resolution, newsworthy, free for use, and there must be a good amount of them from each subject. I love that they do this because we can see great photos of things happening all around the world from different perspectives.

Below are some pictures from a photo series they recently posted called “Harvest 2013” that looks at harvesting from around the world since mid-summer.

Sometimes, no words are needed when there are great photos. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite news oriented blogs.

One That Covers It All

Ever now and then, I come across a blog that covers a wide variety of topics. That’s exactly what the blog The Pioneer Woman does.

Ree Drummond, The Pioneer WomanYou may know that The Pioneer Woman, aka Ree Drummond, has her own cooking show on Food Network known as The Pioneer Woman. She got a show on Food Network because of her blog, which has won numerous awards, and her best-selling cookbook. However, I discovered her on Food Network because I have a mild (more like huge) obsession with Food Network shows. I really don’t know why…

Later, I discovered her blog and man, oh, man does she do a great job blogging! She lives in the middle of nowhere on a cattle ranch with her husband and four kids. One might wonder how she has so much to blog about then. Well, I’m assuming living in the middle of no where with four kids forces one to come up with interesting stuff to do.

Her blog has a number of sections making it easy to search through this wide-ranging blog. The Confessions section includes photos and stories of her husband and children and the animals on the farm.

The Cooking section includes step-by-step photos of all the cowboy-friendly dishes she taught herself to cook through the years. There’s butter involved.

In her Photography section, Ree gives tips to starting photographers and photoshop tutorials.

In the Home & Garden section, Ree shows the step-by-step saga of a start-to-finish remodeling project of an old guest house on the ranch, as well as general home tips and photos of things she loves.

And in the Homeschooling section, she discuss the adventure of homeschooling four children on an isolated cattle ranch, hold regular “Smartypants” trivia quizzes so readers can test their brain matter, and share Words of the Day, interesting trivia, and occasional brainteasers.

There is so much on this blog. So many great recipes, so many amazing photographs, great stories, and more.

B&B: It No Longer Stands for Bed & Breakfast…

it stands for Breaking Bad.

Breaking-Bad_Wallpaper-2

In my opinion, Breaking Bad is hands down the best show ever created. After last night’s insane, crazy, amazing episode, I must blog about a Breaking Bad blog. It is one I just found, but I can guarantee I will be spending more time on it than blogs I follow religiously. Breaking Bad is my new religion.

Enter AMC’s Breaking Bad blog. Naturally, AMC was the place to look for a Breaking Bad blog since the show airs on this network. AMC does a great job blogging about everything that is going on with Breaking Bad such as Awards won, interviews with the actors in magazines or other news outlets, exclusive Q&As with the actors, behind-the-scenes videos, all information about new episodes of Talking Bad, the live after show to Breaking Bad, and so much more.  Goodbye life.

The Best Cast (and Creator) Ever

Some of my favorite parts about this blog are the “Inside Breaking Bad” videos. They have the actors talk about the episode that just aired and discuss what they think is going on with their characters. Check out the Inside Breaking Bad: Season 5 Episode 13, “To’hajiilee” below.

This blog has anything and everything a Breaking Bad lover could want. I am so happy to have found this.

Revisit

Today, I am revisiting a blog I posted about months ago and for good reason. This week marks the first week of my last semester of college, so I thought it would be appropriate to revisit one of my favorite blogs: The College Prepster.

The College Prepster TCP

Even though the author Carly graduated college last May, she still blogs about college-related things. Just recently, Carly posted about study tips and back to school clothes. While I love looking at her blog for other reasons, I think it’s great she still sticks to the roots of her blog and writes on topics that many of her readers relate to.

She has a list of INTENSE STUDY TIPS, a lot of organizing tips to keep you focused on studying and so you don’t forget dates or deadlines, and a list of Apps that are helpful for school.

Since Carly graduated over a year ago and has had a job working in NYC for exactly one year, she does not post much about college or give school advice as much. However, I love the things she posts about. She’s been talking a lot more about fashion and clothing and about what she does in NYC.

Carly posts a lot about work, which is great for me since I am hoping to have a job come December after I graduate. She gives advice on stuff ranging from what Shoes to wear for interviews and jobs to a list of apps that show all How to Feel Like an Adult.

I definitely see myself using the advice she gives (and she gives a lot on all sorts of topics) in my future.

Combo

The next blog I’m posting about is a blog many people know about. It combines (hence the title “Combo”) many things that I’ve posted about before plus other things I am passionate about. These things include humor, celebrities, videos, photos, viral media, lists (I love lists!), fashion, and so much more. The blog is called BuzzFeed.

I mostly love BuzzFeed because of its humorous posts, but it’s so much more than that. Every single time I look at this blog, I learn or see something new. Many people might think that it’s kind of a joke of a website that talks about stupid stuff surrounding celebrities. I don’t think that’s the case. BuzzFeed was co-founded by Jonah Peretti who also co-founded The Huffington Post, and, in 2012, Ben Smith of Politico was hired as editor-in-chief. I think these facts show that it isn’t quite a joke website.

Another reason I like this blog is because I love the way the site is set up. Across the top is a list of topics you can choose from, so you can view exactly what you’re looking for. Those topics are LOL, win, omg, cute, geeky, trashy, fail, wtf, and one with a crooked arrow pointing up. There’s another list under that with more specific topics, which includes news, entertainment, life, and more.

images

I also like how you immediately see a photo with a caption explaining what you will see or read if you click on the photo. BuzzFeed also has so many lists with pictures, such as 9 Surprising Things That Might Not Be Vegetarian, 18 Experiences You Only Have At University, 43 Of The Best Met Ball Accessories, 7 Photos Of A Skinny Chris Christie (LOL) and so many more. The BuzzFeed team is constantly uploading new stuff, too. (Seriously though. Go to the page and refresh it a few minutes later and a couple of new things will be up.)

Here is a look at the whole front page. See all those pictures? Doesn’t it just draw you in?!

While BuzzFeed does post a lot of humorous information and celebrity-based stories, they also write about a lot of stuff going on in the news. BuzzFeed takes a different spin on their stories about news, which I like since I am a journalist and all.  Enjoy!

Trendy

I recently discovered a blog that is all about current trends. I love trendy stuff, but I love discovering new, cool things even more, especially when those cool things are popular. I find it interesting to discover what other people are interested in and why

The blog is called Trendland. The main page features a handful of trendy things from different topic areas. The topics are fashion, design, photography, art, culture, music, video, and shop. You can see all the trending things in those area, how cool!

Check out the front page:

This isn’t a blog I’ve been looking at for a long time, but it is one I really like. Most of the blogs I like, I like because they have great photography, and Trendland has plenty of that.

Love.

Recently, I’ve become infatuated with weddings. My sister got engaged a little over a year ago and a ton of her friends are getting engaged and married, so I see wedding pictures all the time. Also, a couple of my friends work for my friend’s mom’s flower shop and they bring flowers to weddings all the time and have beautiful pictures from the weddings.

Since I will be my sister’s Maid of Honor, I have been looking up wedding details ever since she got engaged. This leads me to how I discovered wedding blogs. And they are wonderful. I love seeing all different kinds of weddings and all the different details. There are so many options when it comes to weddings. You can do anything and everything. There are so many things that make weddings wonderful.

I follow two wedding blogs: Wedding Chicks and Style Me Pretty. Both do a great job at capturing all of those wonderful wedding details that make weddings so beautiful. Both blogs have great photography and include information directly from the bride, which is a nice touch. Something extra special that I like about Wedding Chicks is that they provide a little more information than Style Me Pretty. Wedding Chicks has more information about the details the bride chose, which is nice for those women looking at wedding blogs for inspiration for their own weddings.

Here are some pictures from Wedding Chicks, which focuses more on details:

Here are some pictures from Style Me Pretty, which focuses more on the bride & groom:

Style Me Pretty also includes videos! Who doesn’t love an adorable wedding video?!

Nom nom nom

On to one of my most passionate passions: FOOD! Cue inappropriate fat jokes. Honestly, I don’t understand people who DON’T love food. My love for food has definitely grown over the years. It most likely stems from when I discovered the Food Network and couldn’t – and still can’t – stop watching. I watch Giada at HomeBarefoot ContessaPaula’s Best Dishes30 Minute MealsAce of Cakes,Chopped, and my favorite, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Side note: I do NOT watch these shows daily. Then the show Top Chef started, and I fell in love (it really is a good show. Check it out!).
But then, of course, I discovered food blogs (duh)! Food blogs are awesome. These blogs introduce readers to easy access to recipes, new foods and recipes they haven’t seen before, ways to transform everyday eats into something new and different, easy ways to make meals and so much more. The plus? All of this is at your fingertips. I would suggest to anyone looking to do something different with their daily eating routine to take a few quick glances at some food blogs. There are endless meal ideas. Food blogs can easily help anyone looking for a change in food pace.
One of my favorite food blogs is Dinner: A Love Story. It’s a very popular food blog and one of my other favorite blogs has mentioned this one a few times. The reason I love this blog is because the author, Jenny, is constantly posting new recipes with pictures and a story behind it. But I love this blog for more than her recipes because her blog is so much more than recipes. DALS is very family oriented, so Jenny has done posts on “How to Talk to Kids About Healthy Eating” and how to control overeating dessert. Recently, she did a post on the “100 Rules of Dinner” that I loved. Since I love all blogs so much, the fact that this is not soley recipe-centered food blog, made me a follower. I think one of the reasons I love blogs so much is that you get to learn about other people’s lives and what they’re doing with them. I find it so interesting. Anyway, here are some pictures and posts from DALS.
Burrito bowl:
                       stations
Jenny gives a weeknight and weekend version (the weeknight being an easier recipe). She gives directions for making the chicken, beans, rice, salsa, and guacamole! Awesome.
Some rules I liked are:
1. “Acid” is usually the answer when you taste a dish and wonder ‘What’s missing?’
9. There are very few problems in a kid’s life that aren’t momentarily solved by a stack of chocolate chip pancakes on Saturday morning.
11. No need to sift. Whisking is just as effective.
37. When someone says they drink “one to two” glasses of wine a night, you can pretty much assume its two.
I could keep going. These rules are great.
While I do love a food blog that gets off topic, I wanted one that just gave me its best recipes (well, with just a tad of outside life). And that’s exactly what smitten kitchen does! Deb, the author, posts (almost) weekly recipes of the things she makes from her tiny New York City kitchen. The main reason I love this food blog is because she posts great photos for each step of the recipe, which are helpful for those who actually attempt to make them. And who doesn’t love looking at beautiful pictures of food?! Here are some of Deb’s recipes.

Laughter: “It cures a multitude of ills.”

I agree with Audrey Hepburn. Laughing is one of my favorite things to do. That’s why I love looking at and reading funny blogs (and re-watch episodes of Friends and The Office). There are a ton of them out there. I can’t believe how creative and clever people can be to come up with this stuff. This is another reason I love blogs. You can see the amazing talents of all these people around the world. And, yes, I do consider being funny to be a talent. Hello, Ellen DeGeneres.

My favorite funny blog, which I have been following for years, is called #whatshouldwecallme. The author takes short clips from TV shows and movies and has those explain his/her life and the things he/she experiences. It. Is. Hilarious. The blog is also very relatable for college students because the author is clearly a college student since many of the author’s posts are about law school.

Here are some posts from the blog that made me LOL:
